Rideshare services have changed lives with their ease and convenience and make getting to the airport or going out for the evening as simple as tapping a few buttons on your phone.

Are There Requirements For Rideshare Drivers?

It is easy to become a rideshare driver, with only a few basic requirements. Often, rideshare drivers don’t even need to go through an interview process.

Rideshare drivers must meet minimum driver requirements that often include a minimum age and length of driving experience. Their car must also meet specific vehicle standards, including having four doors and a minimum number of seatbelts, often at least five seatbelts. In addition, applicants usually must provide:

  • proof of car insurance
  •  proof of vehicle registration
  • pass a vehicle inspection

A background check may also be required. However, rideshare drivers are not typically tested or specially trained.

Do Rideshares Make Roads More Dangerous?

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study of rideshare services from 2011 to 2016 concluded that the services contributed to a 3 percent increase in motor vehicle-related deaths.

After rideshare services launched in cities, the NHTSA study also found increases in gas consumption, miles driven, time spent in traffic, and the number of newly registered cars.

What Should You Do After A Rideshare Crash?

When that accident involves a rideshare vehicle, it adds another, complicating layer.  If you are in an accident:

  • Call for medical help if necessary and call the police
  • Collect as much information as possible, including names and contact information for witnesses
  • Take photos of the cars and accident scene if possible
  • Write down and make notes about the sequence of events to help you remember what happened
  • Do not volunteer extra information and be mindful of what you say to others about the accident
  • Report the accident using the mobile app or the form found online

The more organized and thorough you can be in the moments following an accident, the more information you will be able to provide to your attorneys and the insurance companies. Our experienced car accident attorneys can help you if you’ve been injured in a rideshare accident.

Who Pays For The Damages And Injuries In An Accident?

Georgia is considered an at-fault state when it comes to car accidents. In Georgia, generally, the driver who was negligent and/or caused the accident is considered at fault, and their insurance will have to pay for the damages and injuries caused by the accident.  Personal insurance, however, does not always cover damages or injuries caused in a rideshare accident under specific ride-for-hire policy exclusions. Fortunately most rideshare companies carry liability insurance to cover accidents involving their drivers.
