The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Amazon delivered more than 5.2 billion packages in 2023, with projections that it will hit 5.9 billion in 2024. This milestone is after Amazon eclipsed UPS in 2022 and FedEx in 2020. The numbers make it the largest private parcel delivery service in the U.S. This information should come as no surprise, as department stores pull out of malls with millions of happy customers ordering essentials toothpaste and clothes, from Amazon, as well as books, appliances, games, or essentially anything else conceivable.
With this meteoric rise in deliveries, many are already accustomed to seeing its delivery vans in neighborhoods and semi-trucks cruising interstate highways.
Breaking down the numbers
There is no official data on the number of injuries or deaths specifically related to any specific company. Still, we can look at one websites reference to the overall truck accident statistics, which include the country’s largest private parcel delivery service.
The national numbers:
- 54,667 truck accidents in the U.S. resulted in an injury in 2022
- 5,370 were fatally injured (17% were truck occupants, 72% were in other vehicles, and 11% were pedestrians and bicyclists)
